Dido Powell Art Tours 2025: JMW Turner

Wednesday 26 March at 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

- £15.00

Masters, Influencers and Eccentrics

In this series of tours, in conjunction with the Arts & Society Forum, we look at how great artists of the past, in mastering their skills and breaking new ground – often challenging established rules and conventions, influenced subsequent artistic achievements.

All tours start at 2.30 pm and last about 90 minutes.

Each tour costs £15 per person. (Please note that the second tour each month is a repeat of the first.)

The tours are led by Dido Powell, a painter, and lecturer and tutor in art history and painting.

Tour No 2 focuses on the revolutionary nineteenth-century painter JMW Turner.

Turner was more than a painter of storms; he responded to contemporary events: the whaling industry, slavery, the Napoleonic wars as well as new technologies and railway mania. His work is associated with the ‘sublime’ and he championed the idea of painting as an independent act of equivalence to nature, not a copy.

We will also look paintings by other artists across the collection which reflect Turner’s themes, and reveal the persistence of his explorations.
